The process of assigning a facilities resource to a need for a specified time frame is resource scheduling. Resource scheduling will prioritize personnel resources according to the goals of the facilities organization. Reducing downtime of critical assets, extending life of high value assets, reducing service calls and increasing the facilities budget are all goals which can all be impacted by Resource Scheduling.
Assigning personnel resources to scheduled tasks may sound simple, but the factors which can drive work assignment can tell us a great deal about the impact of this key process step in facilities management. Resource Scheduling requires information such as work request priorities and personnel schedules, but those only "scratch the surface" in terms of meeting the operational and strategic goals of the organization.
A key goal of asset lifecycle management is to make more effective use of personnel and assets and continually improve financial returns and projections. Resource Scheduling which is informed by strategic metrics can help ensure strategic goals are considered in day-to-day operations and a part of the process.
Resource Scheduling is a process repeated thousands of times each year by most facilities organizations, and has the potential for great impact on strategic goals. Facilities organizations who aspire to be more proactive will usually identify this process as an opportunity to realize business results.
